Nokia Siemens Networks has announced an improvement to 3G's EDGE via a software upgrade, doubling data speeds of up to 592 kbps to existing EDGE-capable GSM networks. In practical terms, this means that real-time video chat will be improved as will the posting of video clips, real time blogs and mobile TV. Expect a software upgrade this Autumn.
After that, expect to see the emergence of EGPRS 2 which will further increase the data download transfer rate to 1.2 Mbps and the upload to 473 kbps. The release date for this technology has yet to be declared.
