Apple iPhone's opening weekend performance

Eight thousand Apple iPhones were registered on the handset's first day on sale (Friday 9 November), with Carphone Warehouse claiming to have sold 11,000 further devices over the weekend.

According to O2, its stores managed to sell 2000 iPhones within the first hour, with two thirds of iPhone customers porting their numbers from other networks.

However, some have pointed to the fact that Apple's flagship store on Regent Street closed at 11pm, due to lack of customers, an hour before it was advertised to shut. Other retailers have been philosophical about the impact of the iPhone, with Phones4U claiming the hype behind the iPhone had actually increased trading in their own retail outlets, despite the retailer not selling the phone.
