The rise of Mr Patel

We thought that Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, the Asian shopkeeper with the 'Mind Your Language' accent from The Simpsons was the only racist stereotype parody to achieve a cult global following. However, that may soon change with the launch of a new range of mobile content surrounding a corner shop owner called Mr Patel, who's becoming a rising star in the US. And he's coming to a mobile near you.

Mr Patel is the star of a US cartoon series broadcast on G4TV's Late Night Peepshow and apparently has a complicated life trying to keep his family business on the straight and narrow while distracted by talk of vegetarian Hindu sausages, gay elephants, and Bollywood song and dance routines.

According to Zac Toons, Mr Patel is one of the few series in western media where an Asian character takes the lead role, and claims that the series highlights Indian culture in a positive and light-hearted manner.

Mobile customers will soon be able to decide whether they find the character offensive or hilarious for themselves by downloading 10 video shorts, as well as wallpapers, screensavers and voice tones from zactoons.com.
